During the first quarter of 2018, the Sales Academy continued to train Welding Alloys sales forces, focused around the ‘Sparky’ sales process. There were two sessions conducted, one in Poland and the other in Germany.

The Welding Alloys Group held their first ever "Health & Safety Awareness week” from the 14th to the 18th May. We had a topic each day (Smoking, Personal Health & Hygiene, Housekeeping, Electricity awareness, Road Safety) and numerous activities going on across the Group to help promote the importance of working safely as well as promoting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Our top priority at Speedmet Aluminium Turkey is Health and Safety. We have achieved 1,350 days without LTI, which is a record for a manufacturing company! Our second main priority is “motivation” which we consider the most important factor to being a successful company - our machines don’t run themselves, we rely on a human touch.
On the 10th, 11th and 12th of April, Welding Alloys France took part in the 8th edition of the Africa Sugar Outlook in Nairobi, Kenya. This must-attend event is an opportunity to bring together various players from the sugar industry (traders, manufacturers, refiners, millers, government, industry bodies) and discuss trade policy, new investment projects, regional markets, production efficiencies and development opportunities.
On March 6th and 8th 2018, Welding Alloys delivered a maintenance seminar in the CEMEX plant, to the new generation of engineers in charge of short and medium-term maintenance decisions in several plants across Mexico.
The test consists of looking at the performance and savings between refurbishment of a Vertical Mill with WA Hardfacing, using Mill 100/Mill 300 combination and using Ni-Hard High Chrome White Iron on three rolls, under the same working conditions.
On May 23rd, during the 2nd Global CemProcess Conference and Exhibition in London, our Cement industry specialist Nick Sutherland has presented a paper entitled "New wear-resistant welding technology for Vertical Roller Mills" with a focus on Smart Welding and MillCarb™ .
Buzzi Unicem was impressed with our knowledge and expertise and awarded WA USA the contract to rebuild their mill during the 2018 winter outage.
After a lot of talk and some secrecy around MillCarb™, the solution was officially launched on 5 April 2018. We specifically refer to it as a solution, as this is exactly what MillCarb™ is. It creates an ideal opportunity for Welding Alloys Group to offer customers a truly engineered and fully optimised welded overlay solution.
It was interesting to rebuild a new complete version of the Rotary Yoke, using new components, working with new vendors and developing new features for the latest version of this machine. These machines are produced to the same level of quality and reliability as all of our equipment and we have integrated new devices, which create new possibilities for the end user.
Taking into account the existing key industrial challenges our customers are facing, Welding Alloys Group have recently finalised a number of advanced projects suitable for hardfacing jobs.

In the early 1980s, stainless steel flux cored arc welding wires became very popular. These wires contained small additions of bismuth (Bi), often in the form of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) to improve slag removal and help the welder. This is still common practice today, including for TETRA wires.
Chile is the largest copper producer and one of the main mining countries in the world. The mine is where you can see the greatest effects of abrasion since there is a considerable amount of movement of raw material, and the high volume and hardness causes equipment to wear, most notably equipment used for loading, transport, crushing, among others. As maintenance costs are becoming higher for hard rocks and downtime increases, those in the mining industry are constantly looking for better solutions.
