Laser / PTA

Today, the majority of high productivity industrial cladding is still carried out using standard arc welding processes. However, the high heat input generated by these processes can lead to significant dilution, this effect is typically compensated for by applying multiple weld layers to achieve the correct chemistry and good functional properties.

More advanced cladding options, such as laser or plasma cladding continue to grow in  demand, as they can achieve lower deposition rates, resulting in better control of the consumables and lower dilution rates. By applying these, rather than standard arc welding processes, fewer layers are required to achieve the same functional properties and wear resistance.

Welding Alloys, through its extensive R&D program, continues to advance and optimise cladding operations, through the application of laser and plasma processes. Since the fundamental understanding of the interaction between energy and consumables has been achieved, the development of stable processes with greater independence between energy and feeding rates is now possible. As a result, dilution rates of less than 5% are now very achievable, while maintaining the correct chemistry and mechanical properties in fewer layers. Smoother surfaces are produced by laser and plasma processes, compared to standard arc welding, which means a reduction in the overall machining time.
