Closed die forging
Closed die forging, also known as impression die forging, involves compressing a piece of metal under high pressure between two moulds that enclose the material. This process is typically used for intricate designs and high-volume production of components that require high precision, such as gears, crankshafts, and connecting rods. The intense pressure and repeated impacts in closed die forging lead to significant wear on the dies. Key wear issues include thermal fatigue, which causes cracks from repeated heating and cooling cycles; mechanical wear from the contact and friction of the metal; and erosion from metal flow.
Our Solutions for Enhancing Wear Resistance
Welding Alloys provides a range of solutions designed to extend the life and functionality of dies used in closed die forging by addressing the specific wear challenges.
We manufacture a range of cored wires dedicated to forging applications, which include:
- Cobalt Based Alloys: STELLOY 6-G, known for its resistance to thermal fatigue and abrasive wear, maintains performance under extreme conditions.
- Tool Steels: HARDFACE 55Cr-G provides outstanding resistance to hot oxidation and is advantageous for intricate impressions where toughness is required.
In addition to consumables, we provide automated welding machines and engineered wear services (Integra™) to facilitate efficient maintenance and repair, significantly reducing downtime and extending the service life of forging equipment.
